I have been searching for a French vegetarian / vegan cookbook for the last few days and eventually bought an alarmingly sterile one from Larousse. At least it was cheap. I am waiting for a collection of Elizabeth David collection of vegetable cooking - a compilation, but aware that she saw veg more as an accompaniment than a main dish. (I hope to be proved wrong about this.) But she wrote with her heart in the cooking, with plenty of context. In Crete I cook an almost exclusively Mediterranean diet - exception being a sort of Indian based home cooking.) Here in France the problem is an easy dependence on cheese and fish for protein hopefully my new shiny enormously heavy pressure cooker will change all that. So all in all looking forward to your book. Welcome home.
Hello Jenny - yes exactly, about Elizabeth David. Ours too is Med-diet-based. I picked up a great book in a charity shop here called something like Mediterranean Vegan Cooking - can't remember the name of the American author, but I love it. Only problem is there are no illustrations at all, and I realise how helpful the latter are.
I agree, re cheese. Although my partner and I share the cooking and only cook vegan, he still eats cheese, and it's v tempting to have it in the house.
I make sure every meal has protein - beans, hummus, nuts, toasted seeds etc. I talk about that in the book.
And thank you – for commenting, for welcoming me home, for looking forward to the book :-).
Ah wonderful Brittany! Congratulations on your book, I’m always on the look out for interesting recipes for vegan/ vegetarian food. Funnily enough, I was walking round Buckland Abbey yesterday with a friend from St Just and thought of you! The swallows were out in force around the abbey and it was a glorious hot golden day, rich in July flowers. x
Ah thank you Lynne! I meant to write a comment on your last post, but was in a whirlwind in the Westcountry. It was beautiful writing.
So glad to hear about the swallows. They used to nest in my shoemaking workshop there back in the day. Lots of swifts and martins here but almost no swallows. Rx
Congratulations on getting your book off to the publisher!
Aaaw gorgeous Roselle, you make me want to hop on the ferry to Roscoff, even more than I already am (hoping to in September). How funny Huelgoat is twinned with St Just.
Great to hear that your book is on its way to be published. Sounds like a wonderful contribution to those of us wishing to live and make our food in ways that honour the richness of the plant world and refrain from harming animals. Love the way you described your journey home. Also love how you describe each one of the line of trees 'dances their own dance'.
Pete and I cycled from Roscoff to Morlaix. We took a different route from yours to Huelgoat, stayed by the lake and then along the bike track. It was this time of year - summer solstice. I’m looking forward to the latest book and its recipes. What a lot you’ve done since you’ve been in France. No mean achievement in the circumstances. Xx
I remember, Marg! DId you take the main road to Huelgoat? There is, of course, the green lane/voie verte from near Roscoff to near here...
And thank you for your affirmation. I think we perpetually feel we're never on top of things (what a ridiculous project to take on in our 60s!), so it's good to hear your different perception. RX
Congratulations on finishing your vegan cookbook, I am not even vegetarian - by force of having to cook for two carnivores and not having time to faff with two different menus every night than desire though! I eat very little (often none at all) of the meat in my meals, and almost all the veggies...
I don't know where you find the time to write so prolifically Roselle! I am so glad you do though! I love your website, Ive bookmarked it for those days in my holiday when really there is nothing left to do but read! xx

PS Jenny, see previous reply: it's The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, by Donna Klein. Loads of recipes.
But please do buy mine too! - though it won't be a cheap option.

Looking forward to our time together in October x
Thanks MIchelle!
One of the reasons I'm here is BECAUSE Huelgoat is twinned with St Just (am still homesick despite the beauty and relative quiet of here).
Enjoy your time in September. If you don't know it, check out the Crozon peninsula – like West Penwith but much bigger!
Look forward to meeting you in October. Rx

How kind of you, Fiona. Thank you. Comments like this really lift my heart.
Well done, Roselle. That cookbook is a huge achievement and a powerful personal statement.
Thank you, Wendy. Much of its current shape and edit is down to you.
Beautiful.
Alan, thank you.
Welcome home, and congratulations on finally getting THAT book done!
Ah Barbara thank you! And I guess Gerard will finish his marathon this week? Look forward to catching up some time.
If we could live like that. Indeed -- this is so evocative -- beautiful to end the day with. x
That's kind, Jan. X
